According to the information provided by the Portuguese Ministry of Justice, the number of bankruptcies filed in Portugal during 2012 (from January 1 till December 26) reached a record breaking total of 18,627. This represents a 62% increase from 2011 (11.515 bankruptcies), which is partly explained by a trend shift : although companies are still largely responsible for the high figures, there are more individuals being declared bankrupt since 2010.

BANKRUPTCIES SKYROCKET IN SPAIN
According to the latest figures provided by the Spanish General Council of the Judiciary, bankruptcies have reached an all time high of 2.666 during the second trimester of 2012, up 35.3% from the same period last year. The regions of Catalonia and Valencia have registered the greatest number of bankruptcies during this period.
