Spain is, without a doubt, one of the top players in renewable energy. In 2010 wind energy reached almost 20% of the installed power capacity, totaling 20,676 MW, and outperforming water (16.05%), nuclear (7.43%) or solar energy (4.03%), according to data by the Spanish Wind Energy Business Association.
Also during 2010, wind energy was responsible for 75% of the total installed energy in Spain, well ahead of solar photovoltaic (14%), mini-hydraulic (7%), biomass (2%) and solar thermoelectric energy (2%).
The most important variations in installed power took place in the following regions: Cantabria (+ 97.76%), Catalonia (+ 62.32%), Murcia (+ 24.69%) and Castille León (+ 23.59%). Finally, wind energy covered 16.40% of the total demand, which represents an increase of 2% from last year’s results.
