COMPANY INCORPORATION IN PORTUGAL (I)

When setting up a company in Portugal there are several aspects to be considered. First of all, it is important to choose a company name correctly – one than not only reflects what the company is about, but also, and more importantly, one that will be approved by the relevant authorities. Here are some tips  that might come handy when the occasion arises.

1.- Are generic names good options?

No - company names which are only made up of a description of the company's activity are generally not approved. For example, names like Contact Communications, Transport Shipping or Hardware Computers will not be approved.

2.- How about adding a geographical reference?

Adding a reference like Portugal or Lisbon will not add anything to the company name.

3.- Would changing the order round be of any use?

No - combinations such as Contact Communications Portugal/ Communications Contact Portugal/ Portugal Contact, will not be approved.

4.- Are acronyms helpful?

Acronyms should be composed of at least 4 letters. Combinations of 2 and 3 letters are usually already taken.

5.- Are there any safe bets?

Company names must bear a distinctive element, preferably something made up or a fantasy expression.
