When it comes to investing in Portugal, choosing the right vehicle is key to the success of the investment. The two most common options are the branch or a Lda (private limited company/ LLC). Tax issues or protection of the parent company may determine which one is the best choice. Other criteria such as minimum share capital are not as relevant anymore since Ldas can now be incorporated with as little as € 1 per shareholder.
Another interesting feature is that Portugal has striven to cut back on red tape in the past years and long gone are the days of endless paperwork. There is no limitation on foreign shareholders or directors, the only requisite being a Portuguese tax id number, which is fairly easy to obtain.
